With just a few weeks left until our spring educational field trips begin, we’re thrilled to announce that over 1,900 students are registered for this enriching experience at Hopatcong State Park. Our field trip program, set against the picturesque backdrop of New Jersey’s largest lake, will unfold throughout May and June, promising a day of hands-on learning for students across northern New Jersey.
Our educational field trips offer a comprehensive four-hour introduction to lake ecology, emphasizing the vital importance of our water resources. Designed primarily for fourth and fifth graders, these outings provide invaluable insights into environmental stewardship. During a field trip, students experience macroinvertebrate sampling in the Musconetcong River, a discovery hike along paved trails in the park, a lesson on non-point source pollution using an interactive watershed model, and water quality sampling aboard the Lake Hopatcong Foundation Floating Classroom.
Volunteers play a crucial role in making our educational field trips possible each spring. We currently have 150 volunteer openings spread across the 18 days of field trips. You can sign up for any or all days you're available by clicking HERE. The sign-up page is organized by trip date, followed by available volunteer activities for each date. No prior experience is required; brief descriptions of each volunteer opportunity are provided on the sign-up form, and training is offered to all new volunteers. Join us in creating memorable experiences for our participants!
Volunteers who will be working directly with students during our field trip program are required to undergo background checks. There is no cost associated with these checks for volunteers. Upon signing up, you'll receive additional information regarding the background check process. Your cooperation ensures a safe and enriching experience for all participants.
So, get outside this spring, have some fun, and contribute to your community by shaping the next generation of leaders and advocates, like Jill, a Franklin School student, who beautifully captured her field trip experience below.
Jill reflects on the EnviroScape lesson, highlighting her favorite activity of the day. “My favorite thing we did was using the markers at the watershed station. It was so interesting because we made the pollution, oil, and other chemicals wash down into the lake. It helped me to learn about how to protect the environment. It was cool how we could participate in everything. All of the people were kind. It was a wonderful and magical trip.”
