The Lake Hopatcong Foundation’s Student Leadership Team, led by Meghan Craig of the Morris County Environmental Science Academy at Jefferson High School, met on February 12 to discuss their plans for 2020 projects to help improve the environment on and around Lake Hopatcong and its watershed. They were visited by Assemblywoman Aura Dunn (25th District), who praised the students’ efforts and their commitment to improving the world around them.

The students at Wednesday’s meeting, who came from five different local schools, discussed their plans for beach cleanups, trail walks/cleanups, and other activities to schedule this spring and summer, and spent time focusing on what they could do to mark the milestone of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, coming up this April 22. They had a variety of ideas, including creating a “no waste” day at their schools, hiking or kayaking as a group, and spreading social media hashtags to show solidarity around environmental causes at the lake.

Meghan and the team are currently in the process of scheduling these activities as well as their next meeting; if you are interested in being included in their correspondence, email jess@lakehopatcongfoundation.org and we can add you to their list. And we’ll be sure to spread the word when the next Student Leadership Team gathering is scheduled in the coming weeks!
We cannot heap enough praise on this group of high schoolers, middle schoolers, and even college students, who are working to make sure the future of Lake Hopatcong—and the broader environment—is a bright one.
