As part of an ongoing comprehensive feasibility study and design analysis for an oxygenation system for Lake Hopatcong, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, Lake Hopatcong Commission, and Morris County will host a second public meeting on Monday, April 28, at 6:30 pm at the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, 125 Landing Road, Landing, NJ.
This meeting will focus on design concepts and proposed placement of the potential system, including any land-based equipment that may be involved. Attendees will also learn about the next steps in the feasibility process, such as identifying any permits and approvals that would be required if the project were to move forward.
The proposed oxygenation system is being explored as a possible tool to help reduce the frequency and severity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Lake Hopatcong. In early 2023, Princeton Hydro conducted a preliminary review of various aeration technologies. Based on that analysis, oxygenation was identified as a promising option for further exploration.
The current feasibility study and design analysis, which builds on that work, is being supported through funding from the Highlands Council. It aims to determine whether such a system could be effective, appropriate, and financially feasible for the lake.
The first public meeting, held in November 2023, focused on the science behind internal phosphorus loading and introduced oxygenation as a potential management strategy. The April 28 meeting will continue the conversation with a closer look at the proposed design and practical considerations.
Community engagement remains a key part of this process, and public input will help inform next steps.
We invite all interested residents and stakeholders to attend on April 28 to learn more and share their feedback.
