March 25th – Trail Building (10am-2pm)
location to be announced
If not properly built, a host of different impacts – particularly the natural flow of water – can erode and damage trails. This day in the field will teach about techniques like side-hilling and drain-building which help ensure that hiking trails remain in peak condition despite the challenges of erosion from nature and regular use. It will also discuss more advanced trail building techniques like turnpiking and bog-bridging to address wet areas.

Intro to Trail Maintenance (10am-2pm)
Meet at the Hopatcong Senior Center – 32 Lakeside Blvd., Hopatcong (map)
Ever wonder how the trails stay open and passable? Where do those colored marks on the trees come from? Take this workshop Host by LHF and presented by the NY/NJ Trail Conference to find out!
Trail Maintenance is clearing, cleaning, and blazing. Trail maintainers use small hand tools to clip and cut brush out of the trail, remove debris from drainage structures, and paint or hang the markers used for route finding also known as blazes.
This course helps you gain or brush up on the skills necessary to a Trail Conference Trail Maintainer Volunteer. Skills include how to clip trail corridor, clean drainage structures, proper blazing techniques, and reporting trail conditions.
All you need to bring are sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen and bug spray if you wish and enough water/snacks/lunch to comfortably make it through the day.
