A Laker’s Dozen: We Put The Fun in Fundraising

This is the seventh of 12 posts in our A Laker’s Dozen: 12 “Sweet” LHF Achievements from 2016 series – reflecting on and celebrating 2016 and the Lake Hopatcong Community.

For any non-profit, especially a small one such as ours, fundraising is so important. Without those much needed dollars, we aren’t able to continue or expand our programming. When you attend one of our events and become a LHF member, just know that you are contributing to the well being of our organization.

Saturday, July 30, 2016, was a lovely evening that brought together supporters of Lake Hopatcong with spectacular vistas from the historical Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club. Guests enjoyed delicious food and drink, live music by Hank Shapiro, and exciting silent and public auctions of collectibles, artwork, gifts, one-of-a-kind items and experiences.gala8

The theme of this year’s event focused on the whimsical amusement park rides and enjoyable activities of Bertrand Island. The tablescapes included the Ferris Wheel, the “Wildcat” wooden roller coaster, the magical Carousel, popcorn and ice cream, the game pieces for the Go Fish booth, Miss Bertrand Island and the famous Sally Rand “Bubble Lady” to name just a few. Guests were able to get into the spirit of the evening by enjoying a wine ring toss game.

Judy Caruso was this year’s Guest Speaker. She presented a humorous and endearing speech that touched on why she loves Lake Hopatcong and how much she enjoys being a LHF volunteer.

gala3With 66 silent auction items, 11 raffle baskets and seven exciting live auction items, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to our sponsors: Christopher J. Our 4th Annual Lake Loop event was held on October 9, 2016, at the Hopatcong State Park. This annual event features a 20, 40 or 62-mile cycling route, a 1.5 mile or 5K walk/run and a 2.5 paddling portion (which can be done on canoe, paddle board or kayak). This year a dog walk was added where furry friends and their family members could partake of the same adventure walk/run route. Over 200 people participated in this year’s event (some doing all three events)!

As this is one of the fundraisers for the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, Lake Loop attendees were encouraged to raise more than the required $45 minimum to participate. The goal for this year’s event was $50,000 and, at the end of the day, $54,115 had been raised.

The day began with the 62 mile cyclists hitting the road at 8:00 am. Once they were peddling out of the State Park, the first wave of dog walkers took to the course. At 8:30 am, the 40 mile cyclists took the rode and the second wave of dog walkers took to the trail. When 9:00 am rolled around, the 20 mile cyclists, cue sheets in hand, took off for their adventure and the last group of dog walkers headed out. The 1.5 mile and 5K run/walk portion began at 11:00am. To get everyone warmed up, hula hoops were available. The adventure fun run/walk took attendees around the Hopatcong State Park with a challenging hilly trail, over the sandy beach and back to the finish line. There was a brag board available, where participants could write their names and keep track of the amount of times they went around the trail. Beginning at Noon, kayak and canoe participants put their boats in the water to do the 2.5 mile loop around the State Park waters. While a wee bit windy, paddlers enjoyed the gorgeous view of the leaves changing colors.

The theme of the day was “Get Fit For the Lake” and two-legged and four-legged attendees got into the festive spirit by posing in social media boards and posting their photos to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with #LHFLL2016. TapSnap 1097 was present to capture the thrill of the photo finish for the cyclists, walkers and runners. For a plethora of photos from Lake Loop as well as some biking and kayaking videos taken by those participating in the events, visit the official Lake Loop Facebook page at www.facebook.com/lakeloop/ or search #LHFLL2016.

The annual event started with biking around the lake from a church parking lot in 2013, grew to include the bike challenge and a family-friendly walk out of Nixon Elementary School’s parking lot in 2014, and in 2015 the paddling component, led by a local paddling club called the Lake Hopatcong Paddlers, and an adventure trail run/walk organized by the Salt Shakers Running club was added and the event moved to the larger venue of Hopatcong State Park.
